Nail It: A Complete At-Home Manicure Guide

Nail It: A Complete At-Home Manicure Guide

Whether you're pampering yourself or prepping for an event, a salon-quality manicure at home is absolutely doable. Here’s your step-by-step guide to nailing it every time.

What You’ll Need

  • Nail polish remover & cotton pads

  • Nail clippers & file

  • Cuticle pusher & cuticle remover

  • Hand scrub or exfoliator

  • Hand cream or moisturizer

  • Base coat

  • Nail polish (your chosen color)

  • Top coat

  • Optional: nail buffer, nail brush, quick-dry drops

Step 1: Clean & Prep

Start with clean, polish-free nails. Use a non-acetone nail polish remover to avoid drying out your nails and cuticles.

Pro Tip: Wash your hands after removing polish to eliminate any residue.

Step 2: Trim & Shape

  • Clip nails to your desired length.

  • File in one direction to prevent splitting.

  • Choose a shape: square, round, almond, or squoval.

Optional: Gently buff the surface of your nails for smooth polish application.

Step 3: Soak & Exfoliate

Soak your hands in warm, soapy water for 5–10 minutes to soften skin and cuticles.

  • Gently scrub with a nail brush or exfoliating scrub.

  • Pat hands dry with a towel.

Step 4: Tame Those Cuticles

  • Apply a cuticle remover or oil.

  • Gently push back cuticles with a cuticle pusher (never cut them).

  • Wipe away any excess product.

Step 5: Moisturize

Massage hand cream into your hands and cuticles. Let it absorb, then wipe nails clean with alcohol or remover to prep for polish.

Step 6: Base Coat

Apply a thin layer of base coat. It smooths the nail and prevents staining.

Let it dry for at least 2 minutes.

Step 7: Color Time

  • Apply your first thin layer of polish using three strokes: one in the center, then one on each side.

  • Let it dry for 1–2 minutes, then apply a second coat.

  • For sheer colors, a third coat may be needed.

Step 8: Top It Off

Seal in your color with a top coat for shine and longevity. Reapply every 2–3 days to extend wear.

Step 9: Clean Up Edges

Use a small brush or cotton swab dipped in polish remover to clean up any polish outside your nail line.

Step 10: Let It Set

Dry nails for at least 10–15 minutes. Use a quick-dry spray or drops if needed, and avoid using your hands for a bit.

Bonus Tips

  • Stay hydrated: Healthy nails need moisture from the inside too.

  • Use gloves: Protect your manicure when doing dishes or cleaning.

  • Don’t skip the base & top coats: They're your polish's best friends.
